PISTOIA – the Italian Capital of Culture 2017 – in a short film.

Before visiting Pistoia, we had aimed to create a short piece filmically depicting the sights and sounds we encountered in the town. However, when we were caught up in catholic parade at midnight on the first night we were there (between 24 and 25 July – for the feast of local patron Saint Jacopo), we became inspired by the culture around worship and tradition.

We decided to document the feeling of this, by capturing the parades, marches, and the joust of the bear (Giostra dell’Orso).

With the concept of worship in mind, we captured how it pervades everyday life in the region; the nurturing of the fragile life within the plant nurseries, the wild beauty of the mountains where bears once roamed, the power of the storms which shook the town whilst we were there.

Layered above the footage are excerpts of audio which capture the feeling of worship, tradition, and the fragility of human life.
