Istanbul, where you can look at the whole world

Luisa Lenzi

ISTANBUL “If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.” – The French poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790 – 1869) wrote thus of the city on the Bosphorus between East and West, a crossroads of peoples and cultures. And Napoleon Bonaparte had said: “If the Earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital.”

Moving from one district to another, sometimes it seems to be in Kreuzberg, Berlin, with its colorful graffiti; sometimes, in San Francisco with the streets going down and then up; or in some corners of Rome; or also in a crowded Arabic souk. This city is a blender of colors, smells and traditions, where religions, languages and foods are mixed, where you can look at the whole world.
