About Alice Mutasa
I am a freelance photographer currently based in London. I spent five years working in Zimbabwe, and have undertaken photo projects in Belize, Cuba, Morocco and Mali, including the ‘Festival Gnaoua et Musiques du Monde’ in Essaouira. I was the Official Festival Photographer for the ‘Festival au Desert’ near Timbuktu.
My photography is inspired by a desire to capture the small details - shadows, light - that express the essence of places, and the dignity and humanity of every person I meet and photograph. When I photograph in ‘poor’ countries (in material, not cultural terms) I often make a choice not to photograph poverty, desperation. In places places where material wealth may be absent, I try to focus my camera on other – more positive – values, which are often there in abundance if you choose to look.
