Biography
Born in the 1980s in Brazil, where she still lives today, Christiana Matos has always been very curious since childhood and eager to experience everything the adults around her did. So at the age of eleven she enrolled in a drawing course, following in the footsteps of her aunt. Over her time her love for art grew more and more and it was one of the reasons that led her to choose the faculty of architecture, and then move on to drawing and painting.
Philosophy
The curiosity that has always distinguished her has led Christiana to range between various worlds and artistic mediums such as design, fashion, dance, gastronomy and photography. In 2005 you had the opportunity to live in Italy as an architect, working in Renzo Piano’s studio in Genoa. This experience changed her life, giving her the opportunity to experiment with many different mediums that certainly contributed to her education and, in her words, made her a better architect and person. After having neglected drawing and painting for some time, since 2016 he has dedicated himself to finding and perfecting a personal style, letting himself be inspired above all by nature (in the works of Christiana Matos we often find flora and fauna of her Brazil) and creating a language made up of geometric shapes and bright colours, an immediate language of great visual impact that soon begins to decorate small or large walls, external or internal, of various buildings, murals that transform environments and atmospheres.

Christiana’s work draws inspiration from the town of Castagno and the surrounding flora and fauna. In fact, his work represents the village surrounded by nature: the triangles draw the map of the country forming a synthesis of the residential nucleus, seen from above, while the colours chosen (grey and ocher yellow) are those that the artist has noticed to be more present and distinctive (the grey certainly for the many stone houses). The leaves around are instead references to local trees (chestnut, olive, apricot) while the birds depicted are swallows (which are certainly not lacking here). The result is a clear and dynamic composition. The artist started from an initial imprint to get to represent the very idea of the village as it appeared to her eyes during the 2019 Residence. After some preparatory sketches, she discussed the final representation with the owners of the house chosen (Riccardo and Michela of Nido Gaucho), to then transfer the drawing directly onto the wall, freehand with a pencil; finally, with acrylic markers, she coloured her mural of her (here above, a short video shows the work done). It is curious to observe how, coming from the Via delle artiste (Women artists’ street), La Madre by Chiara Coda seems to look towards the work Castagno. Surely, from this perspective, you have a privileged view: not surprisingly, it has become one of the most photographed and instagrammed views of the Borgo Museo!
