Biography

Alfredo Fabbri is remembered by his wife Mary Vettori and by all the people who knew him as a very outgoing, sociable and nice man. He was born in Grosseto on September 2, 1926. During his childhood his hometown was hit by bombings and for this reason he moved to Barba (a fraction of the municipality of Quarrata, in the province of Pistoia), to his aunt’s house, where he spent most of the time. part of his adolescence: a very important place for his development as an artist. Alfredo draws, paints, travels, while his wife Mary is busy with her job as principal in an elementary school. His favorite destination is France: like all artists he has always dreamed of Paris, where he spends some time. The trips provide him with many ideas in both the artistic and cultural fields. One of his greatest passions is hunting; he used to spend Sundays with friends hunting and the following days he explained his artistic skills by painting the prey. Alfredo spends his free days at Cafè Globo, in the city of Pistoia, talking about politics and art with his friends. He loves to converse. He died in Pistoia on February 3, 2010 and since then his wife Mary has never stopped remembering and telling the world about her husband’s art.

Philosophy

Fabbri scopre la sua dote artistica col passare del tempo, da giovane non sa che lavoro fare in futuro, ma trascorre la maggior parte del suo tempo libero nella soffitta della casa della zia a disegnare ciò che vedeva dalla finestra. Presto invitato a partecipare a molte mostre di artisti pistoiesi dove egli porta le sue creazioni che raccolgono sempre più successo. L’artista è un amante della natura, per questo motivo i soggetti dei suoi dipinti sono sempre di tipo naturalistico: vasi di fiori, prati, montagne, colline, notturni, nevicate. Fabbri elabora le sue opere partendo sempre da un segno sottile. E quando sente di averle terminate, le firma: inizialmente, quando era ancora insicuro della propria arte, con SED (che in latino significa MA, come le iniziali di Mary, la moglie, e Alfredo); quando poi, col passare del tempo, riesce a identificarsi come un vero e proprio artista, inizia a firmare col suo nome e cognome. Alfredo non ha mai avuto veri e propri maestri, è riuscito a formarsi da autodidatta nella soffitta della zia, ma si è comunque sempre interessato all’arte ispirandosi ai “grandi” come Cimabue, Giotto, Masaccio e, grazie ai suoi numerosi viaggi in Francia, anche ad artisti moderni come Matisse.

Alfredo is a close friend of Tommaso Paloscia, he and his wife Mary also usually spend summer Sundays in the Paloscia family home in Castagno, in the company of many other artists. Mary remembers very well the excellent lunches prepared by Nara, Tommaso’s wife, the card games, the conversations. Being an expert painter of natural landscapes such as snow-capped mountains, Paloscia entrusts the creation of the December fresco to Fabbri. Alfredo thus depicts, with his deeply expressionist style, the village of Castagno, surrounded by mountains, covered in snow; the pictorial language is essential, the features are simple and elementary, while the cold colours, such as white, blue and grey, clearly recall the winter season.
