BEFORE SUNRISE Celine is French, Jesse is American. They meet on a train to Vienna. He has to catch a plane the next morning back to the USA, while she’s returning to Paris. They like and understand each other. Jesse challenge Celine to get off the train with him and spend the night in Vienna. So the go around the Austrian capital waiting for the sunrise. Walking without any destination the streets and squares of the city or along the River Danube, they encounter even a homeless who asks them a word in return for a poem. The two twenty-somethings guys, hitherto unknown, live such an intense intimacy perhaps precisely because they are both aware that it will only last until the sunrise. Then, they’ll have to say goodbye. As agreed, eveyone will continue his/her own journey. But what if before leaving they arrange an appointement, to see if that spark in a sleeping and shy Vienna was something more? In six months on platform 9.

BEFORE SUNRISE (1995) by Richard Linklater with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
