«New York is a black and white town.»
It’s like an old black and white movie. In this way the director Val Waxman, Woody Allen‘s alter ego who he plays in “Hollywood Ending” (2002), defines New York. The city where Allen was born. The city which Allen has eternalized in the movie that seems to remain the top of his tragicomic poetry, expressed through the cinema: “Manhattan” (1979).
This “chapter one” shows the city “from below upwards“: from the crowded streets to the thick skyline that History continually changes but leaving intact all its terrific fascination. And if fireworks burst in the black of the night, those white lights that stretch towards the stars until they disappear in the darkness seem to tell us that from the top of those skyscrapers, maybe, it’s almost possible to touch the sky.

Così il regista Val Waxman alter ego di Woody Allen, che lui stesso interpreta in “Hollywood Ending” (2002), definisce New York. La città dove Allen è nato. La città che Allen ha reso eterna nel film che sembra rimanere all’apice della sua tragicomica poesia, espressa attraverso il cinema: “Manhattan” (1979).
Questo “capitolo primo” mostra la città “di sotto in sù“: dalle strade affollate al fitto skyline che la Storia cambia continuamente lasciando intatto, però, tutto quel suo tremendo fascino. E se nel nero della notte scoppiano fuochi d’artificio, quelle luci di bianco che si allungano verso le stelle fino a scomparire nel buio, sembrano volerci dire che dalla cima di quei grattacieli, forse, è quasi possibile toccare il cielo.
